Every five years, there is a new upcoming trend and everything which was considered beautiful before, is suddenly discarded in the bin. In our disposable society, most goods lose their value in a hellish tempo. Something which I, as an artist and as a sustainable thinking person, am resolutely against.
What makes it even better for me, is the connection of such design objects with an elementary force. I have always been fascinated by fire, ever since I was a small boy and I spent hours around the fireplace, to my life as circus artist and fire spitter of a street theater company. A passion which I have given shape in a timeless object, a fire pit to share this passion with the world.
Not so simple, because fire is also a destructive force. An object to regularly create fire in must be incredibly strong and be able to withstand rain and wind. A lot of cheaper fire pits can take no more than 5 wood blocks before falling apart. I want to be as far removed from that as possible. The Dewdrop fire pits are made from high-quality weathering steel of at less 10 mm thick and will still be functional even in 150 years and gain in beauty by the oxidation layer which gives weathering steel its appeal.
The fact that you can buy a sustainable fire pit today to create memories with your children who – when you are no longer around – can share memories around the same fire pit…That is an incredibly beautiful thought. Fire connects people and generations, so the fire pit will be advancing in our modern society, I am sure of it. The only thing we need for this, is our human desire for connection and social contact. The best stories were once told round a crackling fire, and that will always remain the same.
